Boxing is one of the oldest known sports, with evidence of its practice dating back to ancient civilisations such as Greece and Rome. It gained widespread popularity in the 19th century with the establishment of formal rules, known as the Marquess of Queensberry Rules, which are still in use today. It has evolved into a popular sport globally, with major professional and amateur competitions, and is celebrated for its blend of athleticism, strategy, and discipline. It is a combat sport and martial art where two opponents face off in a ring and attempt to score points or achieve a knockout by landing punches on each other. The primary goal is to outscore or knock out the opponent. Points are scored based on clean, effective punches and overall control of the fight. A knockout (KO) occurs when a fighter incapacitates their opponent to the point where they cannot continue, or when the referee calls the fight off due to the opponent’s inability to defend themselves.
